ERCP to image the bile and pancreas

Endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatography is a procedure that combines the use of X-rays and endoscopy in order to image the bile ducts and pancreas.
channels with previous application of a contrast agent. The procedure is performed under intravenous analgosedation. The pancreatic duct and bile ducts flow together through the papilla of Vater into the duodenum. The endoscope is introduced up to this level, having previously passed through the mouth, esophagus, stomach to the duodenum. Using an endoscope and
of additional accessories, a contrast medium is injected into the bile ducts through the papilla in order to x-ray these structures. If there is an obstacle in the filling of the bile ducts that is detected on the x-ray, a papillot (electric cutting instrument) is introduced through the endoscope to open the papilla. This makes it possible, e.g. remove calculi from the ducts and allow drainage (swelling) of bile.

PREPARATION
No food or liquid should be taken six hours before the examination.

INDICATIONS

• Endoscopic treatment:
• Dysfunctional papillae
• Benign and malignant stenoses of bile ducts
• The presence of stones in the bile ducts

RISKS

• Bleeding
• Perforation
• Pancreatitis
• Infection
