Ankle ligament reconstruction (also known as ankle ligamentoplasty) is an endoscopic procedure for the surgical reconstruction of one or more damaged ligaments in that joint.

Ligaments are connective structures that stabilize the ankle joint and protect it during movement. Most often, injuries to the external, lateral ligaments occur due to a strong and sudden twisting of the ankle joint during landing.

How is ligamentoplasty of the ankle joint performed?

There are several methods used to reconstruct the lateral ankle ligaments. The operation will be performed by an orthopedic surgeon, the operation can last two hours or more, and is usually performed under general anesthesia. During the operation, the patient's vital signs, such as heart rate and blood pressure, will be closely monitored.
At first, the surgeon will make an incision through the skin and muscles of the ankle joint. If the surgery is minimally invasive, the surgeon will push small instruments and a camera through the incision to perform the surgery. Depending on the injury, the ankle ligaments may be separated from where they attach to the fibula, and then shortened or modified. After surgery, the ankle must be immobilized. It is common to experience pain after surgery, especially the first few days, and for this the patient will be prescribed analgesics. All medication and wound care instructions should be followed carefully. Keeping your leg elevated can also help reduce swelling and pain. The patient will likely need to use crutches and reduce reliance on the wrist for at least a few weeks.
