Morton’s neuron surgery

Morton’s neuroma or Morton’s neuralgia is a painful condition that affects the sole of the foot, most often in the area between the third and fourth toes. Patients often report that the painful sensation is similar to that of walking with a stone in the shoe, or in milder cases like walking with an infected sock in the area of the sole. The pain is due to thickening of the tissue around one of the nerves leading to the toes. Timely treatment of this condition is extremely important, because a long delay in treatment can lead to irreparable damage to the feet. Surgical treatment most often involves neurectomy, that is, the removal of part of the affected nerve.

When is Morton’s neuroma surgery performed?

We always start the rehabilitation process with the choice of better quality and more comfortable shoes, wearing appropriate insoles, treating the feet with cold compresses and longer periods of foot rest. In parallel, the patient is often given drug therapy in the form of locally administered corticosteroids, alcohol sclerosing injections, oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or local anesthetics. Surgical treatment of Morton’s neuroma is approached when conservative therapeutic options have not given satisfactory results. Together with the surgeon, the patient will consider all treatment options and choose a plan adapted to their needs.

How is Morton’s neuroma surgery performed?

The operation is performed under general anesthesia, with a local anesthetic given postoperatively and applied to the foot to reduce pain. A small incision is made between the toes, either to create more space around the nerve by removing surrounding tissue or to remove part of the nerve itself.

Recovery after surgery for Morton’s neuroma

After surgery, the foot and ankle will be in a cast for two weeks. The patient will be shown how to walk in a special orthopedic shoe that protects the foot. Most patients can go home the same day or the next day after surgery. The foot should be rested as much as possible, keeping it above the level of the heart as long as possible, especially in the first week after surgery. Once this week is over, the pain level should decrease significantly. Depending on the patient’s work, they may be able to return to work during the second week after surgery. About two to three weeks later, it is possible to return to sports activities, starting with lighter exercises.
