With significant advances in technology used in medicine, many doors have been opened for early detection of health conditions and problems far before they can cause more serious consequences for our health. Magnetic resonance certainly ranks among the absolute top of modern diagnostics, which can greatly help us on the way to better health and quality of life.
Key benefits of whole body MRI
Thanks to its wide application, this extremely precise diagnostic method provides doctors with an insight into what is happening in the patient’s body long before the symptoms of the disease even appear. What is important for the patients themselves is the reliability of magnetic resonance as a device available in the world and the fact that it is a completely non-invasive, painless method. All this is possible thanks to the combination of radio waves and strong magnetic fields that this technological marvel produces. While the patient is in the device itself, the data is “translated” with the help of advanced computers into images that reveal the true condition inside our body. Soft tissues, organs, bones, joints, blood vessels – in one comprehensive view from which trained doctors-radiologists can clearly see if there are any anomalies in the body.
In addition, it is important to point out that these devices, unlike other types of scanners, do not expose the body to any dose of radiation and no contrast agent is given to perform this examination.
What is whole body magnetic resonance imaging for?
Almost all important organs in the head, neck, abdomen and pelvis pass through the scanner. Thanks to this, the scan can detect changes in tissue structure caused by injuries or diseases, aneurysms, problems with joints and bones and other pathological changes. Everything starts from the head, where with the help of magnetic resonance, potential injuries/changes in the brain or blood vessels, the consequences of a stroke, predisposition to dementia, changes in the optic nerve and inner parts of the ear and spinal cord injuries and degenerative changes in the entire spinal column are detected. In the region of the abdomen and pelvis, magnetic resonance provides insight into the condition of the liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands, kidneys, prostate and ovaries. Also, the procedure includes the analysis of bones and joints in order to determine the consequences of previous injuries and enable rehabilitation planning.
What are the preparations and the recording itself like?
Although we have already pointed it out, it is not out of place to mention once again – magnetic resonance imaging of the whole body is a non-invasive and completely painless diagnostic method. On the day of the scan, patients are allowed to consume food, drink, and their medication as normal, unless specifically noted beforehand. However, for a more pleasant overall experience, it is advised to refrain from consuming large amounts of food and liquids at least an hour before the scheduled examination. As its name suggests, magnetic resonance imaging uses powerful magnets in its work, so it is necessary to remove all items containing metal, such as a wallet, belt, watch, jewelry, dentures or phone, must be removed before the procedure begins. If the patient has any of the medical implants, such as a pacemaker, or a tattoo, it is necessary to emphasize this information before the actual examination. A full body scan takes up to 60 minutes, during which patients need to lie still while our machine performs the scan.
What are the potential risks?
Painless. Without using dangerous ionizing radiation. Without using contrast. Without significant restrictions and preparations for the procedure itself. Magnetic resonance imaging is one of the safest methods in the field of medicine! The overview is available to almost everyone. However, there are some limitations for pacemaker patients and patients with metal implants.
Is whole body MRI “worth it”?
Years ago, magnetic resonance imaging of the whole body built its role in medicine through its use in people diagnosed with cancer in order to establish the success of therapy and monitor the state of the disease. However, the popularity of this procedure is growing in the field of prevention. It is more and more often recommended to people who, for a certain reason, previous medical history or hereditary factors fall into the risk groups for getting certain diseases. Why? Because early detection of both malignant and other problems and diseases significantly increases the chance of curing patients. Whole body magnetic resonance imaging is on its way to becoming the new systematic, general examination of the organism that will raise the alarm well before the disease manifests its true face.
Prevention is a guarantee of health!
Thanks to new technologies like whole body magnetic resonance, the old adage takes on a whole new dimension. With precise, quick and painless determination of the state of the body and potential problems, doctors’ work is significantly easier, and people, like never before, are given the chance to take care of their health.
